1A Florala Wildcats @ 2A JU Blacksher
Saturday Night High School football is always something special
and it is a long tradition in Uriah as the team prepares for
their annual Homecoming Saturday Night festivities at John M.
Sawyer Memorial Stadium. The 2A region 1 team now competes
in one of the toughest football regions historically in Alabama.
Region 1 features Southern Choctaw, #10 Mobile Christian (4-0),
#1 Leroy (4-0) and former Florala football coach Doug Vickery's
#14 Flomaton Hurricanes (3-1). This is Blacksher's first
season in 2A and had been listed a 1A school since 1970.
The team had been a playoff contender from 2005-2008 winning 1A
region 1 in 2006 after going 9-1, but were knocked out in the
first round of the playoffs by AL Johnson.
Florala and Blacksher have a short history with only two prior
games, both by Doug Vickery coached teams. Florala won
their 2005 opener against JU, 56-13 and defeated the Bulldogs in
2004 26-0.
This season, Florala is coming off a hard road loss to region
foe, Pleasant Home and must regroup while looking for their
second win of the season.
While the Wildcats have been shutout their last two contest -
the team remains an 8-point favorite.
