Samson returns to Florala Stan Gooden returns to Florala, but this time he will be walking the opposing sidelines as an assistant coach for Friday Night's opponent, 2A Samson. The former Florala head coach left after last season after two seasons and a combined record of 2-17. (Samson coaching staff at Florala vs. New Brockton Jamboree) The last time Samson played in Florala the Wildcats defeated the Tigers 62-0 with a Robbie Evans led offense and Doug Vickery as the head coach. The two teams started their rivalry in 1947 when Florala won 20-0. Since then the teams have played 53 times with Florala holding a 29-22-2 edge. This season the Tigers have Don Chesteen at the helm who tries to get the Tigers into a winning season for the first time since 2001's 6-5 finish. Samson has finished 1-9 four of their last five years, but have a lot of returning players and a new coach who has the Tigers believing they can win a spot in the playoffs and compete with Elba. Chesteen's last coaching job was at Geneva (1981-1987) for seven years without a losing record and took the Panthers to the playoffs his last three years going 6-3 over the period. In his twelve year career in Alabama the coach has two losing season's both at Geneva County (1977-1980). |
