Leeds becomes
unanimous No. 1 in Class 3A
By PAUL BEAUDRY
For the ASWA
A new $127 million shopping center isn’t the only big debut in Leeds this week.
For the first time ever, the school’s football team is a unanimous No. 1 in the
Alabama Sports Writers Association poll.
While the Green Wave have been on top of the association’s Class 3A poll from
the beginning of the season, today’s poll of 35 sportswriters from around the
state marked the first time they’ve been unanimous. It’s the second first in as
many seasons for Leeds; the opening poll of the 2009 season marked the first
time in school history that the team was picked No. 1 by the ASWA, a spot it
held for three weeks.
The only other unanimous pick was Hoover, which was led the Class 6A poll for
the seventh-straight week.
Two classes saw new leaders in the next-to-last poll of the season. Thomasville
replaced Jackson as the leader in Class 4A after the Tigers posted a 35-7 win
over their Region 1 rival. Maplesville moved into the Class 1A top spot after
Brantley lost to now No. 3 McKenzie, 18-12.
The last week of the regular season should also create turnover in the final
ASWA poll of the season with matchups among ranked teams...
6A No. 1 Hoover at No. 3 Bob Jones
4A
No. 7 Fayette County at 3A No. 2 Hamilton,
1A No. 2 Sweet
