Top teams get no break from schedule

BY PAUL BEAUDRY
For The ASWA

The fifth week of the football season is a chance for some teams to take a break from their region schedules.
As far as some teams in this week’s Alabama Sports Writers Association football poll are concerned, there’s no break this week.
Several teams are cutting across regions and classes – such as Class 6A No. 1 Hoover hosting No. 4 Gadsden City or Class 4A No. 1 Jackson hosting Class 2A No. 1 Leroy.
In fact, all but one Alabama High School Athletic Association team ranked No. 1 in their class play ranked opponents this week. The only one that does not, Class 3A Leeds, doesn’t get a breather. The Green Wave not only travel to 4-0 St. Clair County, which received eight points in this week’s Class 4A poll, but it also marks the fifth-straight week Leeds has faced an unbeaten opponent.
Other No. 1 teams playing ranked opponents include Class 5A Russellville at No. 10 Walker and Class 1A No. 1 Sweet Water hosting Class 3A No. 5 Handley.
There were two changes of note in this week’s poll, as voted on by 36 ASWA prep writers from around the state. The first came at the top of Class 1A, where Sweet Water replaced Linden after the Bulldogs. The other was the disappearance of Prattville from the Class 6A top 10. The 2-2 Lions, whose two losses have been by a total of three points, had made 85 consecutive appearances in the poll dating back to Oct. 16, 2002.
Class 4A No. 7 Fayette County will play at Class 3A Gordo, which received votes in this week’s poll in a de facto Waldon Tucker Bowl. Fayette County’s coach recorded his 303rd career win last week against Haleyville and this week’s game pits his current school – where’s he’s won 226 games – against his former school, where he won 53.
Other games of note include: Class 6A No. 3 Vestavia Hills hosting Class 5A No. 2 Briarwood Christian, Class 6A No. 9 Decatur hosting Class 5A No. 3 Hartselle, Class 4A No. 2 Thomasville at Class 5A No. 4 Demopolis, Class 4A No. 3 North Jackson hosting Class 1A No. 5 R.A. Hubbard, Class 3A No. 8 Glencoe at No. 3 Piedmont, Class 3A No. 7 Bayside hosting Class 2A No. 10 Mobile Christian, and Class 3A No. 9 Clay County at Class 2A No. 8 Lineville.
