Battles between No. 1 and 2 decide more
than bragging rights

PAUL BEAUDRY For The ASWA
Any time No. 1 meets No. 2, there’s
excitement and anticipation. When it’s for a region title it
matters even more.
Two such matchups await teams in this week’s Alabama Sports
Writers Association high school football poll, while six other
games between ranked teams will also decide region crowns as
will six more between ranked teams and those also receiving
votes.
The biggest pairing comes in Class 4A where No. 1 Jackson is at
No. 2 Thomasville to decide the Region 1 title. Both are
undefeated and have been ranked 1-2 since the first week of the
regular season.
After then-No. 4 Hamilton stopped No. 2 Cordova in Class 3A last
week, Handley moved up a spot to No. 2, setting up a road battle
with season-long No. 1 Leeds for the Region 3 title. Hamilton
moved into third this week, a point behind Handley, while the
Blue Devils dropped to fourth.
Six more ranked matchups will decide region titles, led by Class
6A No. 1 Hoover – the lone unanimous pick in the poll for the
seventh-straight week, hosting No. 9 Mountain Brook.
Fourth-ranked Bob Jones will host No. 3 Decatur for the Class
6A, Region 8 title, while No. 3 North Jackson will host No. 7
Fairview for the Class 4A, Region 7 crown.
Class 2A No. 3 Reeltown will host No. 7 Lineville for the Region
5 championship, while Class 1A No. 1 Brantley is at No. 6
McKenzie in Region 2 and AISA No. 3 Crenshaw Christian is at No.
7 Lowndes Academy for the Class A, Region 1 crown.
